Quarter Horse

The roots of the 'American Quarter Running Horse', or Quarter Horse are said to be in the Virginia area, where they would be used to race the short distance of Main Street in numerous towns It’s evolution as a breed was in the southwest, as both a racer and a cow horse.
More than any other breed, the Thoroughbred contributed to the Quarter Horse. Today there is even a registry for ‘Appendix Quarter Horses’, who have one parent registered with the AQHA, and the other a Thoroughbred registered with the Jockey Club.
