The Morgan Horse
Morgans are touted as America's first breed. Thoroughbreds may all trace their ancestry to three studs, but for Morgans, it is only one. Orignaly called 'Figure', his own parentage is unknown, and under much speculation. Many owners of other breeds, in pride, claim their breed to have produced him. No one realy knows. He was foaled 1789 in Vermont.
Figure was renamed Justin Morgan, after his owner. Because of Justin Morgans incredibly versitility, his ability to beat other horses in tests of speed or strength, and to still look pretty pulling a sunday carriage, he was bred extensively to local mares. Amazingly, all of his progeny shared his basic characteristics. And so, a breed was born.
Today, the breed is still known for versitility, competing in every discipline. With this versitilty has come, over the years, a split in the breed. There now seem to be two 'types' of Morgans. One, a more old-style heavy boned horse, stronger. The other, lighter and flashier. Both types share an expressive face and balanced frame.
