Gypsy Vanner

November of 1996 hailed the first Gypsy Vanners in the US, Bat and Dolly. The owners of these started the US Gypsy Vanner Horse registry. The breed comes from the most selectively bred gypsy horses in Ireland, starting somewhat over a century ago. Their ancestry was very mixed, with just about any good looking horse in the British Isles contributing, but the Friesian, Fell&Dales ponies, Shire, and Clydsdale seem the most widely used. Paints are most common, but all colors exist.

There are several types of similar gypsy horses that are sometimes lumped into the same category, and several names even for the types: Gypsy Vanner, Irish Tinker, Gypsy Cob, Gypsy Draft, amoung others. Do not confuse them with the American Spotted Draft! For more information on the types I would suggest reading this article
