The Friesian Horse
Although it can’t quite be agreed upon whether they are a warmblood or a proper draft, it is generally agreed that they are amoung the most beautiful of breeds.
History:
They originated in Friesland (northern Europe), as their name implies, but beyond that not much is known. They were first used as work horses, then for war. In the 1700’s they became increasingly popular under saddle and in harness, leading to a lightening and shortening of the breed. Unfortunately, this fashionability passed, and by the end of the 1800’s there were very few of these magnificent horses left. It has been a slow climb back since then, but the breed now begins to thrive.
Looks:
Always black, with long full manes and tails and ample feathering (hair around the fetlock). They are muscular and compact. Their ‘face’ is distinct: if you’ve seen two our three friesians you will be able to recognize that head anywhere. They stand 15-16hh, and generally weigh upwards of 1300lbs.
