The Belgian
History:
The breed originated as the ‘Brabant’, a draft-type in Belgium. The old-type horses are still called Brabants. The American Association was started in 1887, but the seperation of types (Brabant vs. American Belgian) is considered to be World War I, which halted all importations.
They are the most numerous draft in the US. Their popularity stems as much from their friendly nature as their incredible strength.
Looks:
Brabants generally roan or bay, whereas the ‘American’ or ‘Modern’ Belgian is most often a highly recognized shade of palamino, or sometimes sorrel or chestnut. These colors are not exclusive, others exist in both breeds.
They average 16-18hh and about 1600lbs, though it is not uncommon for a Belgian to reach upwards of a ton.
